The Chocolate Hills
Bohol's most iconic natural wonder — and a UNESCO-recognised geological treasure
What Are the Chocolate Hills?
The Chocolate Hills are one of the most extraordinary geological formations on Earth — and the undisputed symbol of Bohol.

Spread across 50 km² in the municipalities of Carmen, Batuan, and Sagbayan, the formation comprises around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills — some sources count as many as 1,776. They are declared a National Geological Monument by the Philippine government and are part of the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark.
The hills are made of marine limestone — ancient coral reefs lifted out of the sea by tectonic activity over millions of years. Erosion shaped them into their near-perfect cones through a karst process unique to this part of the world. The grass covering turns brown (chocolate-coloured) during the dry season — roughly November through May — giving the hills their name.
Local legend offers two explanations: the tears of a giant who fell in love with a mortal woman, or the remnants of two feuding giants who hurled boulders at each other until they became friends and departed, leaving the hills behind.
Visiting the Viewing Complex

The main viewing complex is in Carmen — the most accessible and most spectacular vantage point. From the parking area a complimentary shuttle takes you to the base of the hill. From there, 214 steps lead to the summit viewing deck, where the full expanse of the formation stretches to the horizon.
Entrance fee: ₱100/pax ~$1.67 / €1.43 / A$2.36
Best time to visit: Early morning (cooler, fewer crowds) or late afternoon (golden light). Peak brown season: February–April.
Parking: Designated lot provided — shuttle is complimentary from there.
Nearby: Chocolate Hills Adventure Park (CHAP) offers ATV rides, zip lining, and a butterfly garden.
